Another Somewhere

“Another Somewhere” is a collection of songs that have all arisen from external inspirations- largely commissions- and so thematically they stand out from the other projects and stylistically are in a middle-of-the-road, bordering on country music, space.

They’re uplifting, inspiring, hopeful & happy songs- a long way from a lot of the introspective themes of “Pieces” and the darkness of “Desire”.

The opening track- “Even though Paul Kelly (after ‘To Her Door’)”- came about from a line that come up in a jam one day and became a problem solving exercise to write a song that brought that one line to life. The line? “Even though Paul Kelly had you walking out the door doesn’t mean I don’t love you no more” led to writing a song that became the imagined letter that the man in Paul Kelly’s song “To Her Door” would have written to inspire his partner. “Then he wrote a letter / said I wanna see ya / she thought he sounded better / so she sent him up the fare.” That must have been a great letter and so this is the song.

“Sundays I Say Goodbye” was inspired by a simple songwriters challenge: “What’s a day of the week song?”

“My Heart is Made of Memories” was a song written for a friend who I met in 2015 on a ride across the U.S.A. He set up a media project called “Motorcycle Memories: Stories of the Road” and asked if I could write a theme song for him, so this song captures memories from the trip when we met and the long list of travels and adventures that are held in Chad Warner’s heart.

“At the Clark County Courthouse” was written for a friend whose wedding was caught in the middle of Covid. He told me about his parents- they married in Las Vegas. “Where?”, I asked. “At the Clark County Courthouse”, came the reply and so a song just had to happen.

“Beyond My Fire” was a remarkable outcome from a commission request. We did a gig for a burns support organisation many years ago and one of the people we played for- Dale Forbes- was setting up a new support organisation called “Beyond Burns” and asked me to write a song for them. It was a privilege to be asked to write a song for people that had been through such traumatic experiences, which had lifetime consequences. Dale wanted a song that was inspiring, uplifting and spoke of what it was to survive beyond burns.
